We’ve received a collection of handwoven cotton blankets, rare ancient water pots, indigo-dyed shawls in plain and stitch-resist designs, traditional Mossi cotton shawls, and our ever-popular recycled plastic bags crafted from prayer mats - all created by skilled artisans from West Africa.

Forever Inspired by Rwandan design 🇷🇼

Our latest treasures from Rwanda have arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited! From the talented artisans of Rwanda, we’ve received finely woven baskets in vibrant shades of blue, pink, red and all the greens plus the colourful “People” planters and bins. All perfect for spring.

Introducing the Inyegamo Collection - a fusion of tradition and skill. Each piece is crafted with a double layer of weaving, highlighting the intricate mix of black and natural swamp grass.

The Gourd Collection features a unique double-weave technique, layering warps to create a modern aesthetic. The elegant Long-necked Gourd serves as a contemporary design piece.

The traditional Rwandan Agaseke baskets. Used to hold precious belongings. Formerly known as Tutsi baskets, they are now called Peace baskets. Delicate strands of swamp grass are spiraled into the iconic design using the fine weaving technique known as Inyanja.

Slow Living at Its Best 🧄

Surrounded by the artistry of Zimbabwean baskets, we invite you to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Zimbabwe was the first major country where Design Afrika began its journey, sourcing and promoting the rich tradition of basketry.

Founded in 1995, Design Afrika was born out of a passion for discovering skilled weavers. Binky drove through remote parts of Zimbabwe and Zambia, seeking out artisans who would bring her vision to life. One of the most memorable experiences was a product development workshop with the talented weavers at Bulawayo Home Industries.

During this workshop, the idea was to create a basket that emulated the shape of a traditional clay pot. However, without an internal structure, the basket took on an uneven form - something that thrilled Binky, as it led to the creation of the unique and beautiful Garlic Basket.

This basket is a testament to the beauty of slow living and the art of weaving, capturing the essence of tradition and innovation.
