Celebrating the Talented Women of Lupane Women’s Centre.

Here’s a glimpse into the incredible work of our partners at Lupane Women’s Centre. These skilled Ndebele weavers are truly prized in their community, creating beautiful, functional baskets that have been a part of Zimbabwean culture for decades.

Binky first noticed the importance of baskets when she visited Bulawayo in 1975, seeing how many women incorporated them into their daily lives. The support from government initiatives and marketing outlets was remarkable. Since then, she had the privilege of partnering with the Jairos Jiri Association, founded in 1940 to assist disabled individuals by promoting handcrafted goods.

Together, we’ve celebrated traditional basketry skills and created wonderful products.

The Old Church Hall Showroom, is filled with an incredible mix of old and new textiles from all corners of Africa. From the intricately woven cloths of Ghana to the safety pin and beaded Mcheka Shangaan, woven cotton blankets from the Mossi tribe, and the timeless Bogolan (mud cloth) of Mali, each piece tells a unique story.

You’ll find modern hand weaves, appliqué, and embroidered cloths that are as versatile as they are beautiful.

These textiles can be used as bed covers, wall hangings, or even clothing - each one having traveled far, bringing artistic stories to life. The handspun, handwoven Mossi cloth is a true icon of design, unchanged through time. It’s fully organic, softening with each wash, and perfect for upholstery, cool evening shawls, or wrapping your little one in timeless tradition.

Back in 1995, Binky embarked on her very first buy

Back in 1995, Binky embarked on her very first buying trip to Etsha, Western Botswana, marking the beginning of Design Afrika’s journey. The women of the Hambukushi and Bayei tribes, world-renowned for their basket weaving, spent the day with her as she sifted through their beautiful creations - a rare and special moment, as it’s no longer possible today.

Binky’s exploration continued to Burkina Faso, her first West African destination, where her love for Burkinabe artisans grew. What began with baskets expanded into textiles and other wonders of West African craftsmanship.

Years of collecting artifacts and knowledge have culminated in an incredible exhibition at Old Church Hall that showcases the authenticity and beauty of African craft.
